Living Walls Gallery Initiative
Bringing rotating art exhibitions into care communities to create spaces of beauty, reflection, and connection.
Why It Matters
People who need extra care should not be excluded from participating in local arts culture. Care communities often serve residents navigating isolation, transition, or cognitive change, and daily access to beauty and creative expression can meaningfully enrich these environments.
What It Is
- Rotating exhibitions by local artists
- Installed in shared spaces like hallways, lounges, and common rooms
- Designed for residents, families, staff, and visitors to enjoy
- Rooted in partnership between care communities and local artists
For Residents
- More beauty, stimulation, memory, conversation, and connection in daily life
For Artists
- Meaningful visibility and new opportunities to share work in community spaces
For Care Communities
- Warmer, more vibrant environments that benefit residents, staff, and visiting families
- Rotating exhibitions by local artists
How It Works
1Care communities apply to host a gallery
2Artists join the network or are invited to participate
3Work is matched to a site and installed for a set exhibition period
4Optional sales, donations, or fundraising pathways may be explored.
Visibility, Support, and Connection
Care communities are active environments, with a steady presence of staff, visiting families, and healthcare professionals. While the primary focus of the Living Walls Project is to enrich shared spaces, exhibitions may also create opportunities for artists to gain visibility and for work to be purchased, gifted, or donated.
When appropriate, select pieces may be available through simple, low-pressure channels. In some cases, a portion of proceeds may support the host community, and families or supporters may choose to purchase works for lasting display—contributing to the ongoing beauty and enrichment of the space.
It's Happening!
The Living Walls Project is launching with a pilot installation at Redwood Grove in Santa Cruz. This first collaboration will bring a small selection of local artists into shared spaces within the community, creating a warm and engaging gallery presence for residents, staff, and visiting families.
This pilot will help refine the model and demonstrate the impact of integrating art into care environments, with the intention of expanding to additional communities over time.

A Growing Network
Living Walls is designed to grow as a thoughtful network of care communities, artists, and supporters who believe beauty belongs everywhere. Over time, the project may expand to include additional host sites, community events, and simple fundraising pathways that support both artists and care environments.
